In 2024 alone, the Heart of Maine Resource Center served nearly 4,000 individuals in 37 different towns. The donation from Maine Highlands FCU will help the organization complete the renovations of their three-story building located in downtown Dexter.

“We are honored to support the important work of Heart of Maine Resource Center. Their commitment to fighting food insecurity in our area aligns wonderfully with our annual fundraising efforts for Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign to End Hunger. Through this donation, we hope to help Heart of Maine Resource Center complete their permanent space, ensuring that no family goes without the food they need and deserve,” said Maria Wooten, President/CEO of Maine Highlands FCU.

The food distribution programs will be located on the renovated first floor of the building, providing permanent storage and refrigeration. The building’s second and third floors will provide space for other collaborating nonprofits, meeting space, offices, and workforce development initiatives. The organization hopes to complete renovations of the first floor by the end of 2025.

Executive Director of the Heart of Maine Resource Center, Laura Gordon, said “We are so grateful to Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union for their incredible generosity and partnership. Their $25,000 gift is more than just a contribution toward our renovation — it’s a commitment to our community and to ensuring our neighbors can access the support they need. This investment will help us open our doors sooner and serve more people, more often, right here in the heart of Maine.”
